But how could a child have distinguished abstract art from figurative art so quickly? The answer is simple: figurative art represents something we already know. It is a "picture" of something in the natural world or even created objects. But it represents something known. Abstract art, on the other hand, does not represent something that we can recognize. It is the creation of something that does not exist through gestures, lines, and textures, detached from reality. For those who paint, making abstract art is the ultimate in freedom. You don't have to be attached to anything at all. Total pleasure, total expression!

Outro dia eu estava pintando perto de umas crianças, e uma delas me perguntou: você está pintando abstrato? Achei demais! Tão pequena, e já com esse conceito em mente. Mas, como uma criança poderia ter distinguido uma arte abstrata de uma arte figurativa tão rapidamente? A resposta é simples: arte figurativa representa algo que já conhecemos. É uma "figura" de algo do mundo natural, ou mesmo dos objetos criados. Mas representa algo conhecido. Já a arte abstrata, não representa algo que podemos reconhecer. É a criação de algo que não existe, através de gestos, traços, texturas, desprendidos do real. Para quem pinta, fazer arte abstrata é o máximo da liberdade. Você não precisa estar preso a absolutamente nada. Prazer total, expressão total!
