Este mês de abril tive o privilégio de organizar e executar um projeto muito bacana: "Literatura para Criança e a Prática da Língua". O projeto, patrocinado pela "Thrivent Financial Services Organization", teve como objetivo proporcionar a prática da língua de herança em uma escola de língua portuguesa na cidade de Orlando, Florida, Estados Unidos.
Dentro desta atividade, fui palestrar para as crianças da escola "Little Brasil Club" sobre como é o processo de produção de livros infantis: desde a elaboração do texto até o lançamento do livro no mercado. Nesse entremeio, expliquei como o ilustrador trabalha para fazer as ilustrações para o livro, inclusive mostrando uma ilustração original que foi usada para um dos livros que escrevi e ilustrei.
Foi uma experiência muito enriquecedora para ambos os lados. As crianças mostraram-se bastante interessadas, fazendo perguntas a todo momento e querendo saber os detalhes do processo, atingindo o objetivo que foi de despertar o interesse das crianças pela leitura dos livros. Neste mesmo projeto, foram doados pela Thrivent 12 livros infantis escritos na língua portuguesa, que é a língua de herança dessas crianças. Como essas crianças estudam em escolas americanas onde a língua ensinada é o inglês, o português torna-se uma língua em que os pais têm que investir tempo e dedicação para a criança aprender, ou manter. E a leitura dos livros em português, ajudaria nesse processo da prática da língua de herança.

This April, I had the privilege of organizing and executing a very nice project: "Literature for Children and the Practice of Language." The Project, sponsored by the "Thrivent Financial Services Organization," aimed to provide the practice of the heritage language in a Portuguese language school in Orlando, Florida, United States.
As part of this activity, I lectured the children of the "Little Brasil Club" school about the process of producing children's books: from writing the text to launching the book on the market. In the meantime, I explained how the illustrator works to make the illustrations for the book, including showing an original illustration that was used for one of the books I wrote and illustrated.
It was a very enriching experience for both sides. The children were very interested, asking questions at all times and wanting to know the details of the process, aiming to stimulate the children's interest in reading the books. In this same Project, Thrivent donated 12 children's books written in Portuguese, which is the heritage language of these children. As these children study in American schools where the language taught is English, Portuguese becomes a language in which parents have to invest time and dedication for the child to learn or maintain. And reading books in Portuguese would help in this process of practicing the heritage language.
